Enrichment Activities

The Harrison Children’s Center offers a rich and full curriculum designed to engage every child within the program.  To enhance our program we offer a variety of specialists exposing children to many different activities.  Our yearly schedule includes visits from educational specialists who bring music, art, animals, storytelling, and American Sign Language to our classrooms.

Art with Miss Doreen:  Doreen Grozinger is a mixed media artist as well as an art and yoga instructor. She has been teaching art in Harrison since 1965.  Miss Doreen visits each program twice a month using a variety of materials and techniques with the children.  The culmination of our art program is an Art Exhibit in April celebrating “The Art of the Young Child.”   

The Nature of Things: Debbie Mumford is the director and owner of “The Nature of things,” an environmental education program.  The program offers nature curricula involving live animals brought to the site for our children to enjoy.  (http://thenatureofthings.com)

Children and American Sign Language in Education:  CASALE Inc. is a unique learning  experience for hearing preschool children.  The use of “finger spelling” is one of many strategies that are used to help develop early literacy skills.  Our children are fortunate to have monthly sign language classes and truly love learning sign language. Cooking with Nicole:  Nicole Pazona will bring healthy cooking into each classroom at Harrison Children’s Center. She will be introducing the children to a variety of ingredients and engage all the senses for a well-rounded culinary experience. Counting and measuring are a natural component to every lesson. When all is done, they will enjoy their delicious creation.

Field Trips:  Harrison Children’s Center incorporates age-appropriate field trips into our curriculum in order to bring real life experiences into their day.  Many of our field trips involve walking to the library for story hour, the local fire house, post office, train station, or stores.  Additionally, we may take a morning and visit an apple orchard, museum, aquarium or planetarium depending on our curriculum for the year.

Early Childhood Gardening Program:  Mark Lambert owner and operator of Forestbrook Landscaping share’s his passions for the environment and gardening with Harrison Children’s Center.  As a father of two young children, he brings his expertise and shares it with our children every spring.  We then harvest our vegetables and use them for our lunch and snack time to help promote good nutrition and healthy eating habits.  ([email protected])
